November 12, 2025Understanding Geos’ Role in SEO
In this article, we will explain how Geos works with your SEO and how Auto redirect affects your SEO.
How Geos interacts with SEO
Geos focuses on helping your customers find the right version of your store — not on managing SEO. Shopify already takes care of most technical SEO tasks for multi-store and multi-market setups, such as:
- Canonical URLs: prevent duplicate content between similar pages.
- Hreflang tags: tell Google which version of your site is for each region or language.
- Sitemaps: help search engines find all your pages.
- Structured data: makes your products appear correctly in search results.
IMPORTANT: Geos doesn’t modify or overwrite any of these settings.
Its purpose is to localize the shopping experience — by showing a pop-up or redirecting visitors to the right store — while keeping your SEO setup intact.

Automatic redirects and SEO
When automatic redirects are enabled, Geos detects a visitor’s IP address and sends them to the matching store.
However, if search engines like Google are also redirected automatically, they might only see one store version instead of all your regional site. This might result in unintended SEO issues.
To help with this, Geos uses bot detection to identify search engine crawlers and exclude them from redirects. This allows Google and other search engines to access and index all localized store versions properly.
Limitations of Bot detection
While Geos uses reliable detection methods, detection algorithms cannot guarantee 100% accuracy in identifying search bots.
Possible rare outcomes include:
- Undetected bots
- Real visitors mistakenly detected as bots
These cases are uncommon and have little impact on overall SEO, but it’s good to be aware that detection accuracy isn’t absolute.
Geolocation popup and SEO
Popups don’t affect how search engines index your store.
💡We recommend choosing to show pop-up instead of automatic redirects, as it’s the most SEO-friendly way to guide shoppers to their preferred experience.
