In this article, we will explain the advanced geolocation settings in Geos app.
First visit configuration#
Set up how you want Geos to appear when a customer visits your store for the first time.
Option 1: Always display Geos on the customer’s first visit (default option)
This option ensures that Geos appears for every customer the first time they visit your store as a welcome popup, regardless of their location.
For example, if a customer from France visits your French store. The geolocation popup will still appear, allowing them to confirm or adjust their preferences, such as language, country, and currency.
This data will be saved in Geos to ensure a seamless and personalized experience for future visits.
Option 2: Only display Geos if the customer lands on the incorrect shopping experience
With this option, Geos will only appear when a customer lands on the wrong shopping experience. If an international customer ends up in a store experience that doesn’t match their detected location, Geos will suggest redirecting them to the appropriate one with region-specific content.
For example:
- If a customer from France visits your French store, Geos geolocation popup will not show up since they’re already in the correct experience. .
- If a customer from France visits your U.S. store, Geos will pop up and recommend switching to the French experience.
Second visit configuration#
Set up how you want Geos to handle a customer’s returning visit when they land in the wrong experience.
Option 1: Redirect only if the customer’s current location matches their selected country (default option)
With this option, Geos will only automatically redirect a customer if their current location matches the country they selected during their first visit to the store.
For instance, if a customer first visits your Australian store from Germany and selects Germany as their preferred country, Geos will only auto-redirect them to the German store on future visits if they are physically in Germany. If Geos detects that the customer is in another country, like Brazil, the popup will reappear.
Option 2: Always redirect the customer to their selected country, regardless of their current location
With this option, Geos won’t detect the customer’s current location but will automatically redirect them to the country they selected during their first visit.
For example, if a customer chooses the United Kingdom as their preferred country when visiting your Australian store for the first time, Geos will automatically redirect them to the U.K. store on all future visits, regardless of whether they are in a different country, like Japan.
Language selector configuration#
In this section, you can choose how the default language to be suggested in the language selector on your geolocation popup.
Option 1: Automatically suggest the customer’s browser language
When a customer visits your store, Geos detects their browser language and automatically suggests that language in the language selector, when the language is available. Customers typically set their browser languages to their preferred languages. If the language is not available, default language will be suggested.
For example, if your store supports English (default language), French, and Spanish, and a customer visits your store with French set as their browser language, the language selector will automatically display French. If another customer with Japanese as their browser language visits your store, the default language—English—will be suggested since your store doesn’t support Japanese.
Option 2: Automatically suggest the language for each market in the Shopify Markets settings
With this option, language selector will not detect browser languages and automatically suggest the language configured for each market in the settings of Shopify Markets.
Language settings#
Set up how you want Geos to configure language experience based on the customer’s language settings
Option 1: Display popup when the customer is in the correct experience but using a different language from their browser language
With this option, a geolocation popup will appear suggesting that the customer switch to their preferred language if they are browsing your store with the correct market experience (e.g., prices, currency, product options) but in a language different from their browser’s language.
Option 2: Automatically change language when the customer is in the correct experience but using a different language from their browser language
This option will automatically change the language to match the customer’s preferred language if they are browsing your store with the correct market experience (e.g., prices, currency, product options) but in a language different from their browser’s language.
Note: Make sure your language selector is enabled before selecting this option.
